When Michigan passed the Michigan Medical Marihuana Act of 2008, I was very proud of my home state, and was invited to speak at the first Michigan Medical Cannabis seminar, held at Wayne State University School of Law.

When I first spoke in Michigan from my 12 years experience in California, I would say: “I’ve seen the future.  Some of it is not very pretty, but some of it is beautiful.”  I hoped people would want to learn how to do things more ethically.  Unfortunately, most people did not want to hear what did not benefit their financial interest.

The only thing worse than capitalism is unregulated capitalism. But I realize that we’re unlikely to get away from capitalism anytime soon, and that capitalism is what is now driving legalization.

So I realize I am not going to change our financial system, but I also will not be promoting those I feel abuse the system either. As one of the first physicians in the country to be regularly consulting with patients on medical cannabis, I was a vocal advocate of high standards and actively worked to educate other physicians. Unfortunately, I watched a proliferation of clinics with incredibly low standards and cannabis-naive doctors who lure patients in with low prices and gimmicky advertising. Worried this would happen in my home state, I applied for a medical license to practice in Michigan as soon as the law was approved. I wanted to be available to see patients who need a medical cannabis specialist who will spend time with them talking about their specific concerns, review their medical history, and answer questions as they arise.

I believe one of the main benefits to a state registration system such as Michigan’s is it makes primary care physicians and specialists more comfortable recommending cannabis for the patients they are already seeing, dramatically reducing the demand for low-cost, low-standard clinics. I’m glad there are so many doctors in Michigan willing to discuss cannabis with their patients. I’m also very happy there are doctors there, like myself, who are committed to being the best medical cannabis specialists possible.

I’m one of the few medical cannabis specialists that regularly sees pediatric patients. I am willing to see pediatric patients in Michigan, but the state has specific rules regarding cannabis for children and special arrangements will need to be made with my staff.

I’m also willing to consult with physicians about how best to incorporate cannabis into a patient’s medical regime.
