Medical Cannabis Recommendations

Pricing: $250 once/year

$600 per year   –  For adults who need ongoing health maintenance coordination with caregivers and/or residential facilities, including detailed dosing guidance or written orders.

Dr. Lucido’s three surveys of hundreds of patients have shown that cannabis can give significant relief from chronic pain (especially neuropathic pain), migraine headache, nausea, insomnia, anxiety, some types of depression, muscle spasms due to multiple sclerosis and other causes, and seizure disorders.

Dr. Lucido is nationally known as a medical cannabis clinical specialist of high standards and has been constructively critical of low-standard practices.  He takes the time and effort to establish that each patient is appropriate in their use of medical cannabis and has defensible medical records.  Patients who are referred to Dr. Lucido for medical cannabis evaluations are always instructed to follow-up all care with their primary care physicians and relevant specialists.

Dr. Lucido is well-versed in the varieties of cannabis and cannabinoid preparations and provides detailed guidance regarding the many therapeutic uses of cannabis.

Dr. Lucido is one of the few physicians in California specializing in pediatric cannabis therapeutics and is currently seeing over 40 children with seizure disorders and/or autism, most of whom benefit from adding cannabis tinctures to their regimen, often allowing for a reduction or discontinuation of other potentially harmful drugs.

For children and cannabis-naïve adults, there are now available CBD-rich strains of cannabis.  CBD (cannabidiol) is much less psycho-active than THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), with less intoxication, sedation or tachycardia, while still having many of the medical properties for which patients take cannabis.

Pricing: $50

Under Prop 215, medical patients and caregivers will still be entitled to grow however much is required for their personal medical needs. Non-medical growers are limited to six plants per residence by AUMA. Dr.Lucido does not issue letters that specify weight or plant numbers, but he can write a special letter for patients whose medical needs require more than the allowances stated in HSC § 11362.1 and § 11362.77.

Recommending Cannabis for Kids

Pricing: $600 for the year, includes an initial visit and quarterly follow-ups

Dr. Lucido is one of the only physicians that specializes in treating pediatric patients with cannabis.  We have seen especially positive results in treating children with autism and epilepsy. Dr. Lucido does not recommend cannabis to his patients lightly, and this is especially true with pediatric patients.  He requires regular follow-up for children to ensure there are no negative problems developing.

More research is needed on the treatment of children with cannabis, but children’s health should not wait for a slow federal bureaucracy that is irrationally scared of cannabis.  Cannabis has consistently been proven to be a safe medication with far fewer side-effects than many other medications that are being prescribed.  Many patients come to our office after having tried every available treatment with no success.  With diligent follow-up, treating kids with cannabis medications can be done in a responsible manner.

While THC is the most widely-known cannabinoid (the primary active components of cannabis) there are a number of different cannabinoids that have varying effects.  One of the cannabinoids being used more frequently these days is Cannabidiol or CBD.  CBD, in addition to showing great promise as an anti-convulsive medication, is non-psychoactive and actually diminishes the psychoactivity of THC without reducing the medical effectiveness.  This makes CBD a good option for treating children.  Dr. Lucido is an expert in dosages and will provide on-going support to parents to ensure their children are getting the most out of their medicine.

Marinol Policy

Pricing: $675/year for new patients (includes quarterly followup appointments)

Dr. Lucido holds Marinol (a synthetic form of THC, the main psychoactive cannabinoid in cannabis) maintenance to a higher standard of care than medical cannabis evaluations since he is actually prescribing a drug, rather than simply making a recommendation, and thereby causing the patient to use the drug.  For that reason, the following policies regarding Marinol appointments are strictly adhered to by our office. Read more about Dr. Lucido’s Marinol Prescription Policy.

The initial annual fee for Marinol maintenance is $675, and $650 annually after the first year.  This includes an extensive annual evaluation and three quarterly follow-up visits.  Dr. Lucido’s authorization to use Marinol automatically expires if the patient fails to make and keep these quarterly appointments, no exceptions.

Patients are required to have ongoing care with their physician for the serious illness or symptom they are treating with Marinol, and are required to bring in records from the past 12 months documenting this.  Patients must have a valid government-issued ID or driver’s license and must be 21 years of age or have written parental consent.

* Any exceptions to these requirements must be discussed with the doctor before making an appointment.

Some valid reasons for which Dr. Lucido might prescribe Marinol:

• For use when a patient travels out of state, where cannabis may not be legal.

• For patients whose insurance will pay for Marinol, making it more affordable.

• For patients who can’t use cannabis for employment or legal reasons.

Invalid or Illegal reasons:

• A physician MAY NOT legally prescribe Marinol for the express purpose of covering cannabis use in drug testing, because this would be aiding and abetting a patient in breaking the law.

• Like all medical decisions, the benefits should generally be felt to outweigh the risks.

• We do not accept insurance for Marinol evaluation or maintenance.  We do NOT complete any prior authorizations or other insurance-related paperwork.

• Marinol maintenance does not constitute primary care.  It is assumed that you already have a primary care practitioner.  If not, you are advised to obtain one.
